AHT Scholarship Recipients

2019 AHT Scholarship Awards Recipients

The following individuals are the recipients of the 2019 Africville Heritage Trust Scholarship. Each candidate has been awarded a scholarship of $1000

Desiree Sparks comes from the Ross, Sparks branch of the Africville Community. She has served as a youth leader at Victoria Road Baptist Church. She was awarded the 2018 Teacher/education Scholarship from African Canadian Services Division. As a Way of giving back to her community, Ms. Sparks is enrolled in her second year of the Bachelor of Education Program at Mount St. Vincent University with the intention of teaching African Nova Scotian history to grades 7-12. She says “My African Nova Scotian students will know their heritage and will understand what it means to be unapologetically Black”.

Taylor Parrot-Williams is the great-granddaughter of Grace and Wilford Ford, and the great niece of Edward and Murlene Dixon. In addition to her studies, she is committed to community and has demonstrated this through volunteer work with the Cobequid Health Centre Walk/Run Marathon, and her role as a volunteer, who assisted in organizing, mentoring, and team building with the Sackville Soccer Club, just to name a few thing. She also played piano at her church and school events. Ms. Williams wants to combat racism by having the tools to create change. She is currently in her second year at Mount St. Vincent University studying towards a Bachelor of Public Relations degree with also incorporates Psychology, Political Science, and Persuasive Communications.

Kyla Simmonds is the great-granddaughter of Leona Cassidy and Stanley Dixon, and the granddaughter of Robert and Olive Cassidy. She is one of the leaders of youth group and you band at her church. She is also one of the lead singers in the senior praise and worship team. Ms. Simmonds has also travelled throughout the country representing Gymnastics Nova Scotia where she volunteers as a couch. She says that since the age of five, she was always quite clear on what she wanted to do in life, which was to be a doctor. She is currently studying a double major in Biology and French with a potential minor in Philosophy at Dalhousie University. Ms. Simmonds feels that having knowledge in these three fields will help her to connect more fully with her patients.

Karetta Simmonds is a younger sister of Kyla’s and the great-granddaughter of Leona Cassidy and Stanley Dixon. In addition to being on the Principals List for three years in a row, she was MVP of the girls basketball team. She is also active in her church and she is a member of the senior and youth praise teams; she also volunteers with the Children’s Ministry. She does this all while maintaining a 90% average. Ms. Simmonds has been admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Bioveterinary Science Program at Dalhousie University.

Zaria Armstrong is the granddaughter of Gordon and Helen Anderson, and the daughter of Claudia Anderson-Armstrong. Zaria is in her third year at Guelph University majoring in Psychology and minoring in Studio Arts. She intend to complete her Masters and pursue a career in Sports Psychology. She currently runs for the Guelph Track team and in her first year at Guelph, she qualified as one of the top 12 fastest women in Canada. She also qualified as a team member on the Ontario vs. Quebec team where she placed first in the 60m and first in the girls team relay, setting a new team record. She won bronze medals in the 100m and 200m runs at the Canadian Nationals in Vancouver.
